Traceability: knowing where your leather began
Leather is made from hides that come from the meat and dairy industry. Brands and their customers increasingly ask where their materials came from, so being able to answer is part of doing business.
Three levels of traceability
- Product: which factory made it.
- Leather: which tannery made the leather.
- Hide: where the hides came from. This is the hardest level and depends on the whole supply chain.
Why the tannery is the key link
Much of leather’s environmental impact and chemical risk sits in tanning. Knowing the tannery means you can check its ratings, audits and test reports.
How we approach it
Our leather comes from the group’s own tanneries, KKSK Tanning Company Pvt Ltd and KKSK Hides Pvt Ltd, so we always know which tannery is behind a product, and buyers can ask for that tannery’s documents.
Questions to ask
- Which tannery made the leather in my product?
- What documentation covers it?
- How far back can the supply chain be traced, and how is that checked?
