How to check a leather bag's quality in five minutes
You do not need to be an expert to spot good craftsmanship. These checks take about five minutes.
- Stitching. Lines should be straight, with even stitch length and no loose or skipped stitches. Stress points such as handle joins should be reinforced.
- Edges. Cut edges should be smooth, evenly coloured and sealed, with no cracking or rough fibres.
- Symmetry. Handles, pockets and panels should match on both sides, and the bag should stand or hang evenly.
- Leather. Colour should be consistent across panels. The grain should feel uniform, without stiff or thin patches.
- Hardware. Zips should glide, buckles and clasps should feel firm, and plating should be even without rough spots.
- Lining and interior. Seams should be tidy and pockets well attached.
- Handles and straps. Give them a gentle tug. Attachments should feel solid.
- Smell and finish. Leather should smell clean, not of strong chemicals, and the finish should feel even.
For a production order, turn this checklist into agreed inspection points in your tech pack, with limits for what is acceptable.
